What are fillers & botox?

Fillers and Botox are both injectable aesthetic treatments, but they work differently.

Dermal fillers are injectable products used to add or restore volume, support facial contours or address selected areas such as the lips, cheeks, chin or facial lines.

Botox works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected muscles. In aesthetic practice, it may be used to soften the appearance of expression lines in suitable patients.

Because they work differently, the treatment that may be appropriate for one concern may not be appropriate for another.

A facial assessment helps determine whether fillers, Botox, a combination approach or no injectable treatment is appropriate for you.

Who may consider fillers or botox?

You may want to discuss injectable treatments if you are concerned about:

  • Expression lines that become noticeable when you smile, frown or raise your eyebrows
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Lip shape or volume
  • Cheek or chin definition
  • Selected facial lines or folds
  • Changes in facial contours associated with ageing

Suitability cannot be determined from the concern alone.

Your medical history, previous treatments, facial anatomy, skin condition and expectations should also be considered before treatment.

How do fillers & botox work?

Dermal Fillers

The filler is injected into carefully selected areas beneath or within the skin, depending on the product being used and the treatment goal.

The amount and placement are determined during treatment planning rather than using the same approach for every patient.

Botox

Small amounts are injected into selected muscles responsible for particular facial movements.

By temporarily reducing activity in those muscles, Botox may soften the appearance of certain expression lines.

What happens during your appointment?

1. Consultation

We start by discussing what you would like to address, your medical history, previous aesthetic treatments and your expectations.

2. Facial Assessment

Your facial proportions, skin and where relevant muscle movement are assessed before a treatment plan is discussed.

3. Treatment Planning

Your doctor explains which areas may be treated, the proposed approach and what you can reasonably expect.

4. Treatment

If treatment is considered suitable and you decide to proceed, injections are placed in the planned areas using an appropriate technique.

5. Aftercare

You will receive instructions on what to do and what to avoid following your treatment.

Potential benefits of fillers & botox

Depending on the treatment selected and the individual patient, injectable treatments may help:

Soften Selected Expression Lines

Botox may reduce the appearance of certain lines caused by repeated facial movement.

Restore or Add Volume

Dermal fillers can be used in selected areas where additional or restored volume is desired.

Enhance Facial Contours

Fillers may be considered for areas such as the cheeks or chin when greater definition is desired.

Address Lip Shape or Volume

Treatment can be planned according to existing lip anatomy and the patient’s goals.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Both treatments are performed without surgery, although they remain medical procedures and require appropriate assessment and aftercare.

Individual response, duration and recovery can vary.

Recovery & aftercare

Many patients are able to return to their usual routine relatively soon after injectable treatment, but this varies according to the procedure and individual response.

Temporary effects around injection sites can include redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising.

Your doctor will explain the relevant precautions and when to seek medical advice if you experience an unexpected reaction.

Frequently asked questions

They work in different ways. Fillers are generally used to add or restore volume in selected areas, while Botox temporarily reduces the activity of selected muscles and may soften certain expression lines.
That depends on what is causing the concern. For example, a line related to muscle movement is different from an area affected by volume loss. A consultation helps identify which approach may be suitable.
The appearance after treatment depends on several factors, including facial anatomy, treatment area, product, amount used and technique. Your expected outcome should be discussed during consultation.
Duration varies depending on the type of filler, area treated and individual factors. Your doctor can give you more relevant information once the treatment plan and product are known.
The duration of effect varies between individuals and treatment areas. Your doctor will discuss expected duration and follow-up based on your treatment.
Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising can occur after injections. Recovery differs between patients and between filler and Botox treatments.
They may be used as part of the same treatment plan in suitable patients, but this should be decided after assessment.
No. Medical history, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, previous procedures and other individual factors may affect suitability. These should be discussed with your doctor.
